Opera (e)Studio reaches its eighth edition fully consolidated. More and more singers are showing interest in joining this initiative. The artists selected for this production will spend almost two months on the island of Tenerife. Here they will carry out an intense work of musical and scenic aspects in order to launch an opera title within the lyrical season of the Auditorio de Tenerife. In this edition the work to be performed will be "Il matrimonio segreto" by Domenico Cimarosa, a co-production of Ópera de Tenerife, Teatro Regio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo.

This opera is a dramma giocoso in two acts with music by Domenico Cimarosa, on a libretto by Giovanni Bertati and based on the play “The Clandestine Marriage by George Colman the Elder and David Garrick. The Italian première of the opera was given at the Hofburgtheater of Vienna on the 7thFebruary 1792 before the emperor Leopold II. The emperor liked the performance so much that, after inviting the whole company to dinner, he asked for a complete encore of the opera. It is one of Cimarosa's most interesting and best-known operas, a clear example of opera buffa from the 18thcentury. The plot is full of impossible situations, disguises and happy endings, where a wealthy merchant, eager to move up the social ladder, seeks to marry his two daughters off to noblemen. However, the businessman is unaware that one of his daughters has secretly married one of his employees. This impending conflict is spiced up with particularly original music, which stylistically falls somewhere between Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti.

 Participants

After completing the audition process, the 12 singers selected to be part of the 2020/21 Opera (e)Studio "Il matrimonio segreto" can be announced. The singers will join Opera (e)Studio on 28 January 2021. The programme will culminate with performances of "Il matrimonio segreto" on 18, 19, 20 and 21 March 2021.

Opera de Tenerife

Tickets for Friday and Saturday are sold out

Tomorrow, Thursday the 18th of March at 6:00 pm, Auditorio de Tenerife premieres the opera Il matrimonio segreto, by Domenico Cimarosa. This will be the first of four performances planned for this piece, a coproduction driven by Auditorio de Tenerife together with Teatro Regio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo. The singers who comprise the eighth edition of Opera (e)Studio will feature this opera. The four daily performances until Sunday the 21st of March, will all start at 6:00 pm; tickets are sold out for Friday and Saturday. This initiative is promoted by the Department of Culture of Tenerife Island Council -managed by the Councillor Enrique Arriaga - through Ópera de Tenerife.

Il matrimonio segreto will situate the scene in New York in the 1950s, where the patisserie Geronimo & Co. specialising in babàs (a typical sweet from Naples) is run by an Italian who misses his home-town. His youngest daughter, Carolina, has secretly married Paolino, a delivery boy at the bakery; both of them dream of starring in Broadway musicals. Geronimo's idea of marrying off his daughters to great noblemen will lead to the plot, originally set in Bologna in the 18thcentury.

During this first performance, Italian sopranos Giulia Mazzola and Eleonora Nota will respectively take on the roles of Carolina and Elisetta; French mezzo-soprano Claire Gascoin will be Fidalma, while the male roles will be played by Turkish tenor Bekir Serbest (Paolino), Italian bass Francesco Leone (Geronimo) and Chilean baritone Ramiro Maturana (Count Robinson). This cast will be the same as in Saturday's performance.

Roberto Catalano is the stage director and the music will be played by the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife conducted by Davide Levi; Emanuele Sinisi is in charge of the set design, the costumes were created by Ilaria Ariemme and the lighting designer is Fiammetta Baldiserri. All of them feature for the first time at Opera de Tenerife, except Baldiserri.

Opera (e)Studio is a project of Opera de Tenerife that aims to train singers after a comprehensive artistic improvement programme that began last January. During this multi-purpose initiative, artists work on many aspects such as techniques of musical interpretation to stage performance; style, diction, body language or dramaturgy, which will alternate with sessions resembling the real professional pace of a theatre: costume tests, make-up and rehearsals with the orchestra.

Tickets can be purchased until two hours before the concert on the website www.auditoriodetenerife.com and by dialling the phone number 902 317 327 from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. By purchasing tickets, you accept the measures implemented by the cultural centre to combat Coronavirus, such as the correct use of masks and attendance to the event only with people you live with. Opera de Tenerife

Alejandro Krawietz pointed out that this Opera (e)Studio edition has seen a record participation

Tenerife's Island Council presents the opera Il matrimonio segreto, by Domenico Cimarosa. It will be performed from March 18th to 21st in the Symphonic Hall of Auditorio de Tenerife. This opera is a co-production with Teatro Reggio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo, both of which will host it during the 2021/22 season. The staging is set in the 1950s and takes place in a New York bakery. The opera will be performed by the twelve singers who comprise the eighth class of Opera (e)Studio, a comprehensive learning project organised by Ópera de Tenerife.

The details of this production were announced today [Thursday 11] by Alejandro Krawietz, Island’s Director of Culture, and Giulio Zappa, Artistic Director of Opera (e)Studio; Roberto Catalano, Stage Director and Davide Levi, Conductor. Details were announced during an informative event at which all twelve singers who will star during the four performances were also present.

According to the Island's Director of Culture "the programme has a comprehensive character in the operatic field", qualifying it as a highlight during this season of Opera de Tenerife. Krawietz explained the difficulties inherent in this edition due to the pandemic. He also pointed out that "during their stay on the island, the twelve singers undergo a learning process with a very intense professional pace". He also declared that "singers were chosen through an international call for applications, which attracted 195 candidates, a record number in all editions that have been held".

Giulio Zappa, Artistic Director, stressed the importance of this project in which almost hundred singers have participated over the last eight years. He thanked the whole team for their involvement in bringing this work to fruition. He also hoped that "the singers will always remember this time in Tenerife, despite the fact that this year has been a bit peculiar due to the health situation"; he was confident that this experience will be "important and fun for their life and professional career".

Roberto Catalano, Stage Director of Il matrimonio segreto, said he was "very happy to be here during this peculiar historical moment. “We have made a team effort and I thank everyone for making me feel at home. Davide Levi, Conductor, emphasised that "the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife is doing a marvellous job". He also valued how "incredible" it is to offer a concert with audience under these circumstances, so "I am very fortunate to be part of this project".

Catalan singer Jan Antem spoke on behalf of his colleagues. "It is a challenge to perform this opera because it has a very peculiar style," said the Spanish baritone. He added that "the experience in Tenerife has been very pleasant" and also recognises that he is fulfilling a dream by being able to perform this same title in Italy, namely "in two theatres with a long tradition", such as Teatro Reggio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo.

Il matrimonio segreto is set in New York in the 1950s, where Geronimo & Co. patisserie specialising in babàs (a typical sweet from Naples) is run by an Italian who misses his hometown. His youngest daughter, Carolina, has secretly married Paolino, a delivery boy at the bakery, and both dream of starring in Broadway musicals. Geronimo's idea is to marry off his daughters to noblemen. This will lead to the plot development, which was originally set in 18th century in Bologna.

The young artists are Giulia Mazzola (Italy), Veronika Seghers (Germany), Eleonora Nota (Italy), Marilena Ruta (Italy), Mara Gaudenzi (Italy), Claire Gascoin (France), Bekir Serbest (Turkey), Antonio Mandrillo (Italy), Ignas Melnikas (Lithuania), Francesco Leone (Italy), Jan Antem (Spain) and Ramiro Maturana (Chile). In addition to Roberto Catalano and Davide Levi, the staff is rounded up with Emanuele Sinisi as set designer; Ilaria Ariemme as costume designer and Fiammetta Baldiserri as lighting director.

Ópera de Tenerife has chosen the twelve singers who will participate in the eighth Opera (e)Studio, following the selection of the programme’s artistic director Giulio Zappa from 195 candidates from 36 countries. The young singers will reach the Island on 28 January to start their intense comprehensive training  that will end with the performance of Domenico Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto, from 18 to 21 March at the Sala Sinfónica of the Auditorio de Tenerife, a venue under the Cabildo de Tenerife’s Department of Culture run by councillor Enrique Arriaga.

Geronimo will be played by Lithuanian  Ignas Melnikas  and Italian Francesco Leone; the Italian  singers Eleonara Nota and Marilena Ruta sing the role of ElisettaItalian Giulia Mazzola and German Veronika Seghers will play CarolinaFidalma is to be performed by Italian Mara Gaudenzi and French Claire GascoinCatalan singer Jan Antem and Chilean Ramiro Maturana have been chosen for the part of Conte Robinson, while Turkish Bekir Serbest and Italian Antonio Mandrillo will play the role of Paolino.

Il matrimonio segreto is one of the most interesting and best-known operas of Cimarosa, a clear example of 18th century opera buffa. The plot is full of impossible situations, disguises, and a happy end: A rich merchant wishing to climb up the social ladder tries to marry his two daughters to members of the aristocracy. But he ignores that one of his daughters has secretly married one of his employees.

This opera by Cimarosa has six roles that will be played by the twelve singers in the four performances of this co-production between Auditorio de Tenerife, Teatro Regio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo. The music director for this show is Davide Levi while Roberto Catalano is the stage director.

The singers, whose age range from 22 year-old Seghers to Serbest, who is 31, will have several master classes on the island by director Giulio Zappa, soprano Mariella Devia and stage director Silvia Paoli.

Auditorio de Tenerife, part of the Department of Culture, Education, Youth and Sport of the Cabildo de Tenerife, keeps working with the specialization academy Opera(e)Studio, which has made changes in its usual calendar. The current situation and its consequences in terms of safety and international mobility have led to the relocation of the auditions and the staging of the eighth opera, which is co-produced with Teatro Regio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo.

The auditions were meant to take place between 11 and 19 May 2020 in the Spanish municipalities of Madrid and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in the Italian cities of Parma and Palermo. We are currently trying to find the best date at the end of the present year to carry out these tests safely and with all the health and quality guarantees for participating singers.

Therefore, the calendar of this Ópera de Tenerife programme has changed. The production of Il matrimonio segreto by Domenico Cimarosa, that was scheduled for October 2020, will now take place in the first quarter of 2021, provided that this exceptional situation allows it. Later, the production and the same cast will travel to the two co-producing theatres.

Although the registration deadline was on 19 April, Ópera de Tenerife announced registration is to be kept open. In fact, with the aim of offering the best options to interested artists, the registration period is extended until further notice. The audition dates will be published as soon as possible on this website.

All those who are already registered will individually receive this information on their email. If candidates have any doubts or need further information they can write to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Ópera de Tenerife thanks you for your support and understanding in this complex situation.

This programme for young artists aims to provide highly specialised training in the international opera field while also acting as a showcase and springboard for many of the singers. In past years candidates from more than 24 countries have taken part in the auditions. Ópera (e)Studio also shows the technical production work done at Auditorio de Tenerife, which in 2019 and 2020 was recognised by the European Commission’s Creative Europe programme which reflects its development, sustainability, job creation and training.
