2017 I Capuleti e i Montecchi
Part of Ópera de Tenerife, the project targets young professionals who as yet do not have enough stage experience. Firstly, singers at local, national and international level are selected to then start a month-long training in musical and dramatic aspects in order to put on an opera title within Auditorio de Tenerife’s opera season. Opera (e)Studio was set up to fill in the void young artists find themselves in when they finish their higher education and must make their debut on the stage.
Giulio Zappa as artistic and musical director of the project, Silvia Paoli as stage manager and a large team of professionals train the singers in all the aspects necessary to achieve a good opera performance according to current European standards: musical and stage performance technique, style, direction, body language, theatrical nature of the role, historical context of the composition, dramaturgy, libretto studying, etc. which ends by staging the production of I Capuleti e i Montecchi by Bellini, with Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife and which is part of the Opera de Tenerife season, thus securing direct contact with theatre reality.

Production: I Capuleti e i Montecchi
I Capuleti e i Montecchi is a lyrical tragedy in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini with libretto by Felice Romani on the story of Romeo and Juliet, based on Italian sources like Luigi da Porto and Matteo Bandello. It was premiered on 11 March 1830 at Teatro La Fenice in Venice. A must-see example of early belcanto, including intelligent orchestration and great lyrical moments, this work by Bellini presented by our Opera (e)Studio is about the impossible love of Romeo and Giulietta. Felice Romani’s libretto is not based on the Shakespearean text but on older sources, although the rivalry of the two families and the tragic ending of the lovers is kept. It is peculiar for the role of Romeo to be performed by a mezzo, who sings the famous “Cavatina de Romeo” in the first act. Chronologically -it comes just before his great productions like La Sonnambula, Norma and I Puritani- is a testimonial of the start of Romanticism, which symbolically begins in 1830, the same year the opera was premiered.
